Transitioning Your Garden & Lawn From Summer to Fall

Say it isn’t so! Is it our imagination, or do summers fly by quicker and quicker with each passing year? You know the drill: The days are getting shorter, the mornings and evenings are becoming cooler and everyone begins to default to hibernation mode. But before you lock yourself away indoors for the foreseeable future, it’s time to set up your outdoor area for success throughout the fall and long, long winter. September is the perfect time to start this project, so between pumpkin-spice lattes, football and apple picking, give your yard a little love so you’ll have a leg up next spring! If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed at this prospect, the pros at Castle Point Landscape Design, experts in planting in New Jersey, are here to assist you with whatever your heart desires, from lawn aeration to planting a bountiful fall garden!

Beauty Knows No Season

The vibrant colors and textures that saw your outdoor space through another stunning New Jersey summer are sure to be fading and on their way out. So, let’s clean up the old and replace with new, fall-friendly planting options. With a little care, maintenance and imagination, you’ll find the seasonal transition from summer to fall to be seamless. Here are just a few ideas of how to make the most out of your fall garden and lawn:

  • Make your bed. Great advice from mom, and for your garden. Start by clearing out debris that has gathered such as dead leaves and flowers. Remove annuals that are no longer flowering, and after harvesting any vegetables or herbs that remain, remove plants that are no longer producing. While you’re there, check on your perennials and prune and divide as necessary. Weed thoroughly and then rake your garden’s soil to prepare for planting.
  • Mum’s the word. It’s not a secret that a fall garden can be just as showstopping as those spring and summer varieties that get all the attention! Create a sea of color with mums, pansies, asters and other brilliant posies that thrive in cooler weather. Also, consider a fall vegetable garden consisting of lettuce, spinach, kale, broccoli, carrots, beets and radishes. A couple of weeks after planting your autumn prized possessions, fertilize your plants to prepare for mulching.
  • Thank you very mulch! Mulching your garden not only gives it a polished, finished look, but it also provides a host of benefits to fall plantings. It helps with temperature regulation and moisture retention, protects root health and can squelch weed growth. Time to mulch away!
  • The grass is always greener. Well, it is when you provide necessary care and nutrients! While we’re too early in the season to worry much about raking, be sure to rid your yard of any debris that has accumulated such as fallen twigs or branches. You’ll want to continue to mow your lawn weekly through the first frost, but it may be time to put the sprinklers away, as fall lawns tend to require less water.

Now, take a moment to survey your property. Are there brown spots on your lawn, or areas with poor growth or sections that have poor drainage where water pools? If so, your lawn may be crying out to be aerated. While homeowners may choose to aerate their lawns themselves, this may be a task you’ll want to leave to the professionals. Soon after aeration, your lawn would appreciate being fertilized, as the aeration holes allow the fertilizer to more deeply penetrate the soil.
