Tips on the Best Bulbs for Fall Planting
Fall is no time to retreat inside and ignore the beauty of outdoor living. Sure, we know the temperatures drop and the crisper weather arrives—but that’s the joy of the season! In addition to the cooler weather, there’s plenty to love about this time of year. There are huge leaf piles for jumping, cozy fire pits for chatting and sweet apples for picking. And, of course, a favorite among homeowners—garden planting!
That’s right. The end of summer doesn’t mean you need to stop playing outside in the dirt. There are plenty of shrubs, flowers and even vegetables that can be—and should be—planted during the cooler months. And our landscaping experts can advise you on all three. Considering a fall garden? Here’s a guide to what you can plant this October.
Shrubs, Trees and Bushes
While it’s true that spring is when everything seems to blossom, fall is the perfect time to get many things in the ground. Some shrubs prefer cooler air and cooler soil for their planting season. Here are some popular options:
- Evergreen trees
- Rhododendron
- Crepe myrtle (Black Diamond Best Red)
- Hydrangea (Vanilla strawberry)
- Dwarf blue-flowered chaste tree
- Neon flash spirea
Flowers
To give your fall garden extra color this season, choose these flowers for cool weather planting:
- Chrysanthemum. “Mums” come in a wide range of beautiful colors and are full, easy to care for and hardy.
- Pansies. Quite possibly the perfect fall flower, pansies also offer a great deal of color and bloom full and easily. When planted in the fall, they often return in spring!
- Flowering kale. Flowering kale is not edible but it produces beautiful colored, feathered leaves that will brighten up any garden.
- Aster. These deeply colored plants display vibrant shades of purple, pink, blue and white flowers.
Cool Season Vegetables
There are a handful of vegetables that do quite well when planted in fall or winter. Winter vegetables are pretty hardy and cope very well during the colder months. The following can be planted now:
- Onions and shallots
- Garlic
- Broad beans
- Spinach
- Peas
- Asparagus
